Introducing Champion Clothing and Sportswear
Champion first came into being in 1919, when the Feinbloom Brothers created ‘Knickerbocker Knitting Mills’ (later renamed to ‘Champion Knitting Mills Inc.’ and ‘Champion Products’), a sportswear business based out of Rochester, N.Y. The company kicked off its production by making a selection of sweaters and sportswear, then, in 1926, supplied the school uniform for Wentworth Military Academy. Over time, the brand expanded its reach, and its clothing line grew, too.
As Champion evolved, it developed new techniques to enhance the quality of its products. One such technique was the Champacraft flocking process, which Bill Feinbloom developed to allow for the mass production of T-shirts displaying different graphics—notably college insignias. Another key development was the Reverse Weave sweatshirt, which was engineered to prevent shrinkage in the wash.
The brand’s proliferation of college apparel led to a new movement in which these clothes joined people’s regular wardrobes, and nowadays, Champion is recognised as a key player on the fashion scene, not just a sportswear brand (though it remains a market leader in this area). The brand offers a variety of products encompassing hoodies, jumpers, jackets, and more, and these are worn not only by regular fashion fans but also by well-known celebrities, who jumped on—or, arguably, ‘sped up’—the hype train during the ’80s and ’90s.
