Nike Air Max shoes have been making the rounds since they were introduced in 1987, setting a high bar not just for performance but also for appearance. Thanks to the Swoosh brand’s signature Air unit (an innovative technology that provides lightweight cushioning beneath the foot), sneaker fans the world over have discovered what it means to walk on air.
The original Air Max trainers, pioneered by Tinker Hatfield, were targeted toward runners; however, their unique aesthetic has made them popular among the lifestyle crowd, who are drawn to the visible air bubble. Whether you’re looking for maximum impact protection or a casual shoe that you can wear daily, the JD Sports Australia selection of Nike Air Max sneakers is guaranteed to impress.
The Technology behind Nike Air Max Shoes
It’s true that the Air Max line didn’t materialise until ’87, but did you know that Air technology has existed since the ’70s? Envisioned by Marion Franklin Rudy (a former aerospace engineer from NASA), this unique form of cushioning entered the stage as part of the Air Tailwind, a revolutionary sneaker from 1978.
After interest in the technology grew, Hatfield borrowed the concept and made it more visually appealing. The Air unit, previously hidden, took centre stage for the Air Max 1, with a window in the sole allowing footwear fans to see this unique addition in plain view. Naturally, the AM1 proved a huge success, laying the foundations for dozens of iterations to come: 90, 270, 97, 95, and more.
Complete Your Look with Nike Air Max Slides and Clothes
The collection has become so influential that you can also find Air Max slides and clothing. The slides feature their very own Air unit—visible, of course—while the clothes are complete with distinct AM branding. Browse the JD Sports Australia range to check them out for yourself!
