When the first Nike Air Max 270 shoes were released in 2018, fans of previous Swoosh releases were taken aback by what would soon become another classic. Designer Marie Odinot had taken the best elements from some of the most popular kicks in the Air Max line—the sock-like upper from the 180 and the prominent heel from the 93—to create something fresh yet familiar.

Despite the strong influences, the 270s were not named after the two iconic trainers that inspired them; they were named after the visible Air unit, which can be seen from 270 degrees. Adding thirty-two millimetres of extra height, this layer of underfoot cushioning guarantees comfort by making it feel like you’re walking on a bed of air.

It’s often the case that sneakers from the big brands are built for runners, but this doesn’t apply to the 270. Though the collection boasts many of the same features that make running shoes so comfortable, it’s marketed as a lifestyle shoe first and foremost. The sporty aesthetic is just a bonus.
