The History of HOKA

The brand was founded in 2009 by Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard, who were former employees from another running company. The pair set out on a mission to design a shoe that allowed for faster downhill running. This is when HOKA was born. The name of this brand came from the Māori language phrase meaning "to fly".

What made this company different from its competitors was the big outsole, which contributed to more cushioning. Because of this feature, these running shoes became popular with ultramarathon runners.

HOKA increased their exposure by sponsoring a variety of professional runners. The first athletes were mostly trial ultra runners, but they soon expanded to several track and field, triathlon, and road-running athletes.
