The History of Air Jordan Shoes
The brand finds its roots in 1984, when Nike formed a partnership with soon-to-be basketball-celebrity Michael Jordan. One year after the contract was signed, the AJ1 made its debut on the court, drawing controversy (and media attention) because of the sneakers’ unconventional colour scheme, which favoured red and black colours over the white required by the NBA. Consequently, Nike were forced to pay fines on behalf of Jordan, though the payoff was immense.
Today, the Jordan brand is separate from Nike, having been established as a strong independent player in the footwear market. Every sneakerhead can recognise the Jumpman silhouette, the logo depicting the NBA star himself scoring a slam dunk in mid-air. Not only are AJ1s still making the rounds, available in high, mid, and low styles, but they’ve also been joined by loads of fresh collections, from the 4s to the 11s.
