Become a certified trendsetter with the JD Sports Australia collection of Nike Dunk shoes. We stock a wide range of colourways and styles, including high and low tops, allowing you to customise your appearance to suit your personal approach to fashion. Whether you’re looking to step onto the street, the halfpipe, or the basketball court (where the Dunks made their first appearance), these sneakers are always on trend, with their retro silhouette maintaining that timeless edge.
The Story of Nike Dunks
Inspired by popular sneakers that came before, Nike Dunks aimed to shake up the basketball trainer scene in 1985. The designer of the shoes, Peter Moore, differentiated his creation from others on the market by emphasising colours aside from the standard white. When they launched as part of the ‘Be True to Your School’ campaign, the uppers of the first Nike Dunk high tops had distinct colourways based on 12 schools in the US, all of which would be later reintroduced as retro models.
Unfortunately, the overwhelming popularity of the Air Jordan 1 meant that Dunks struggled to compete in the basketball arena, and it was skateboarders who latched onto the trainers, appreciating the use of thick leather padding and a grippy texture. Today, the sneakers are worn by people of all varieties, be they athletes or fashion icons, and there are not just highs, but also low and mid tops spanning dozens of unique colourways, from the Panda (black and white) to Grey Fog and Valerian Blue.
How to Style Nike Dunks
Once you’ve acquired your pair of Nike Dunks, it’s time to start thinking about how you’re going to wear them. Fortunately, they’re incredibly versatile shoes, so there’s lots of freedom in approaching this task. Let’s walk you through some of the options.
First things first, consider which version of the collection you have. If you’ve picked up a pair of low tops, you can easily combine them with both shorts and trousers; high tops, on the other hand, tend to work best when you stick to the latter. With that out of the way, you need to decide what look you’re going for: streetwear or smart casual (we’d suggest avoiding anything too dressy).
Of course, don’t forget to wear complementary colours. Neutral tones (such as black, white, and grey) can combine with various colours, giving you more room to mix and match. However, if you purchase some Dunks with a vivid palette, you must be selective to guarantee a balanced appearance.
