The Origins of New Balance Shoes
After spending decades building its reputation as a trusted supplier of footwear accessories (namely arch-support inserts), New Balance released its seminal sneaker, the Trackster, in 1960. The aim of the Trackster was to give athletes a choice over the width of the shoe—a gamechanger for competitive runners, whose performance would greatly benefit from this less-restrictive approach. Naturally, it didn’t take long for the athletic community to latch on to the brand, and NB found itself a legitimate competitor in a space previously dominated by a select few companies.
In the ’70s, NB truly became a household name, with new owner Jim Davis applying his expertise to grow the brand from a small-time manufacturer with only a handful of workers to a fully-fledged behemoth. Nevertheless, he continued to place emphasis on the personalisation aspect introduced by the Trackster, the selling point that made NB’s dive into the sneaker world successful, providing customers with a slew of new collections built for different purposes, such as speed and stability. To coincide, the sneakers were given model numbers instead of the traditional names put forward by competitors (and NB previously).
