No sneaker collection is whole without a pair of adidas Originals Gazelle shoes, available at JD Sports Australia. This long-standing sneaker is an icon of the footwear community that continues to be sold to this day, even though it debuted as far back as 1966. And this is no great revelation, as the Gazelle’s bold yet simple aesthetic, complete with gold lettering and the adidas three stripes, is timeless, bringing an athletic feel to what is now considered a street-ready silhouette.
If you’re interested in grabbing some Gazelles, there are several different styles to choose from, including crisp leather and the OG Indoor with vintage suede and a classic gum sole. What’s more, these are purchasable in a variety of colourways, ranging from green to pink.
Introducing the adidas Originals Gazelle
Since arriving in the mid-60s, the adidas Gazelle has reigned as one of the greatest sneakers on the market. As the successor to the Olympiade, it began as an all-around training shoe, setting itself apart from the competition by being the first to incorporate a suede upper as a departure from the traditional leather of the time.
Initially, the Gazelle was presented in two different colourways: blue and red. The differences between the two versions went deeper than appearances, however, with the blue having a microcell ripple sole (suited to indoor use) and the red having a non-slip transparent gum sole with waves (suited to outdoor use).
It comes as no surprise that the Gazelle became immensely popular among athletes, who were captivated by the sneaker’s lightweight, flexible design. This popularity ensured that the silhouette was first in line for a revamp when adidas revisited their old catalogue in 1979, and the collection evolved to become a specialist handball shoe. Like many sports shoes of the time, the Gazelle was quickly adopted by the lifestyle crowd, given publicity by fashion icons including hip-hop artists and other high-profile celebrities.
