The Generational History of BIRKENSTOCK
The German brand BIRKENSTOCK is one of the oldest names in the footwear industry, tracing its roots back to 1774, when shoemaker Johannes Birkenstock made his first appearance in the historical archives. Hailing from Langen-Bergheim, Germany, the Birkenstock family has spawned a long line of footwear innovators, including Konrad Birkenstock, who changed the game with his contoured insole, which contrasted with the flat soles used in most shoes during his time (the 19th century). He further went on to design the first three-dimensional shoe last, a mechanical form that resembled a human foot, a critical breakthrough in the shoemaking process.
The modern BIRKENSTOCK shoe, the ‘Original Birkenstock Footbed Sandal,’ came about in the ’60s. This was an open-toed sandal with a flexible cork insole, and it became especially popular among the athletic community, who enjoyed the fact that it made the user engage their toes to keep the shoes from falling off. Since 1979, this collection has been known as the ‘Madrid.’
To this day, the brand continues to go from strength to strength, with its key collections (such as the Arizona and Boston) driving immense interest among the fashion-conscious and those looking for comfortable footwear. When viewing pictures of your favourite celebrities, you may spot some of them wearing a pair of clogs or sandals by the brand, which shows how well-regarded its name has become.
