What Is the adidas Stan Smith?

The adidas Stan Smith made its debut in 1965, at which time it was known as the Robert Haillet, reflecting the brand’s endorsement of the popular French tennis player. It was in 1978, after Haillet retired from the sport, that the shoes became the Stan Smith in recognition of yet another tennis player, this time of American background. Smith’s name, as well as his image, became prominent features on the tongue, and his landmark deal has gone down as one of the most successful in history.

Though the Stan Smith has strong connections to its titular sportsman, the collection isn’t carried by its name only, having established itself as a capable sneaker in its own right. For starters, when the collection landed on the scene, it became the first tennis shoe to use a leather upper. In the leather were lines of perforations for additional ventilation, which substituted for the three stripes that traditionally identified a collection from adidas. These were further combined with a rubber outer sole to create a relatively simple item of footwear that was nevertheless practical and aesthetically pleasing.

Despite the sneaker’s decades-long history, there have been relatively few alterations to the core design of the silhouette, not counting new colourways and models with minor deviations from the original. Some examples of different models include the Lux (which noticeably features better-quality leather), the Vulc (an EVA-modified favourite of skaters), and the Primeknit (with its woven upper).
